The Food Dudes Healthy Eating Programme is an award winning programme developed by The Food & Activity Research Unit at Bangor University, Wales to encourage children to eat more fruit and vegetables both in school and at home. It is based on positive role models (the Food Dudes characters), repeated tasting and rewards. Real Events is responsible for the overall coordination of this programme, from the initial planning and creation of materials, scheduling deliveries of fruit and veg and reward merchandise to schools, ongoing in service training and support of teachers, and monthly reporting to Bord Bía, the EU and other involved parties. Bord Bía initially awarded a three-year contract to implement the Food Dudes Healthy Eating Programme as a pilot scheme to 150 Irish Primary schools across the country. The Real Events model of implementation won a World Health Organisation Award in December 2006 (one of 9, out of 390 applications world-wide). In January 2007 Real Events won the tender for the national rollout of this Healthy Eating Programme to all primary schools in the Republic of Ireland which is currently ongoing. How The Food Dudes Programme Works There are two main phases to the programme: Phase 1 is an intensive intervention that lasts 16 days. During this time, fruit and vegetables are delivered to the school, one portion of each per child. They are read a letter and/or watch a specially designed video of the Food Dudes (super-hero characters). Each day the children are rewarded with small prizes for successfully eating the fruit and veg. This phase is primarily school based. |
