Capture The Power

Bord Gais Energy - Capture the Power - Schools' Photography Competition

Client: Bord Gáis Energy

Real Events developed a schools photography competition that spanned both primary and post primary levels for Bord Gais Energy. The project was phenomenally successful in its first year in 2009 and had almost 600 schools participating, and over 4500 entries from children aged 5-18. The programme was in the top five schools initiatives in 2009. The student brief was to ‘Capture the Power' in the Environment, World Around Them and in Sport. Student photographs have been profiled on the Bord Gais Energy website and also in the ‘Bord Gais Energy At Home' magazine that goes to each customer with their energy bill.

The programme culminated in the winners of each category and a group of their classmates attending the Capture the Power Awards ceremony and Energy Festival in Croke Park. The awards ceremony was an ‘oscar' style event, with entertainment from the science entertainer, James Soper, and a prize giving to the students after that. Students were also given the opportunity to interact with various different forms of energy through a range of activities, including a bungee run, radar goal and smoothie bike (Potential & Kinetic Energy), Light and hear exhibits and Thermal imaging camera.

The programme has enjoyed continued success in 2010. This year children were asked to focus on capturing the energy in their worlds. Entry levels increased to 692 schools and 4886 entries. A VIP awards ceremony was held for the winners at Dublin Zoo.
